While some local football region championships have been clinched, fans will have to wait another week to see which team comes out on top of other regions. Summerville had the Region 8-AAAAA Championship wrapped up entering its Nov. 1 game, but put the exclamation point on that by defeating cross-town rival Fort Dorchester 50-21 in North Charleston to complete a clean sweep of the region.
The Green Wave improved to 10-0 on the season and 5-0 in region play and will receive a bye for the 5A, Division 1 playoffs scheduled to begin Nov. 15. “Our MO this year has kind of been when we have players go down we have some others step up and do a good job and that was the case tonight,” Summerville coach Ian Rafferty said.
“Hopefully with this win we will get the No. 1 seed and get a chance to play at home. Hopefully we can get healthy and make a run.
” Senior quarterback Jaden Cummings passed for approximately 200 yards and a touchdown and rushed for four TDs. He threw to sophomore receiver Jaiden Kelly-Murray for a catch and run that covered 68 yards to the end zone. Sophomore running back Jayvyn Williams scored on runs of 44 and 2 yards.
The Green Wave defense managed to limit the production of the Patriots’ normally potent rushing attack and held Fort Dorchester to under 100 passing yards. Most of the Fort Dorchester highlights came in the first half when the Patriots scored on a 5-yard run by Ryan Campbell, a 96-yard kickoff return by Jalen White and a 40-yard pass from Kevin Johnson to receiver Anthony Williams. The Patriots tied the game 21-21 in the opening minute of the second quarter, but trailed 35-21 at the half and 50-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Region 7 Many where expecting Goose Creek to clinch the Region 7-AAAAA Championship Nov. 1 with a win over Cane Bay, but the Cobras weren’t among them. Cane Bay made the short trip to Goose Creek and upset the Gators 28-21.
The Cobras improved to 2-7, with a 2-2 mark in the region while the Gators fell to 5-4 and 3-1. Goose Creek closes its schedule Nov. 8 by facing cross-town rival Stratford (4-5, 2-2).
Cane Bay wraps up its schedule by hosting Berkeley (5-4, 3-1) Nov. 8. The Stags lost 13-10 to Goose Creek Oct.
11 so they need to win and get help from Stratford in order to claim the region title outright. 2A Philip Simmons claimed a 50-22 road victory over Andrews Nov. 1 to improve to 8-2 with a 5-0 mark in Region 6-AA and complete a clean sweep of its region opponents.
