Summerville and Fort Dorchester picked up region gridiron victories Oct. 25. The Green Wave improved to 9-0 with a 4-0 mark in Region 8-AAAAA to clinch the region championship and the region’s top playoff seed for the playoffs with a 42-14 home victory over West Ashley (4-5, 2-2).

The win marks the second consecutive year Summerville has won its region’s football championship. Sophomore running back Jayven Williams rushed for touchdowns of 20 and 21 yards to give the Green Wave a 14-0 lead. Sophomore Jaiden Kelly-Murray then stepped into the spotlight.

The receiver/defensive back hauled in a bomb on Summerville’s next possession to set up a Green Wave first and goal. He then rushed into the end zone for his first of two touchdowns on the evening. Later in the opening half, he made an interception to set Summerville up at the West Ashley 20-yard line.

That led to a TD pass from senior quarterback Jaden Cummings to sophomore tight end Ethan Woods. Another interception by senior Jadin Waring led to a 20-yard TD pass from Cummings to Kelly-Murray and a 35-0 Summerville lead at the half. In the third quarter, Cummings threw to senior Carson Guinn for a TD catch that put Summerville up 42-6.

Summerville closes its schedule Nov. 1 with a trip to cross-town rival Fort Dorchester (5-4, 2-2). Patriots Fort Dorchester is coming off a 64-6 win at Stall (0-8, 0-4).

With junior Ryan Campbell leading the charge, the Patriots had another strong night rushing the ball, but continued to show they also have a dangerous group of receivers. Sophomores Mykell Warthen and Duke Williams were among the receivers who made big plays during the blowout. Williams caught a touchdown pass from senior quarterback Banks Wickersham.

Swamp Foxes Ashley Ridge (6-3, 2-2) suffered its second consecutive region loss, falling 30-20 to James Island (6-3, 2-2) in The Swamp. The Swamp Foxes scored on a pair of runs from senior Jayden Acosta and on a pass from junior quarterback Trevor Kalisz to senior receiver Bam Deweese as well as on a two-point conversion run. Ashley Ridge held a 12-10 lead at halftime and a 20-17 lead in the third quarter before the Trojans pulled away to bolster their standing in the region.

Ashley Ridge closes its schedule by hosting West Ashley Nov. 1 while James Island closes its schedule by hosting Stall..
