The Summerville boys stepped onto the tennis courts March 21 and pulled out a win in a tough region match. During a Friday night lights event at Doty Park, the Green Wave captured a 5-1 win over West Ashley to improve to 7-4 on the season with a 2-0 mark in 5A Region 8 headed into Spring Break. “The match could have gone either way,” said Summerville coach Jesse Gladis.
“On each and every court, our athletes hustled, scratched and battled for every point. It could easily have been decided by a No. 1 doubles showdown, but your Wave boys took care of business when it mattered most.
” Summerville lost two starters to graduation this past spring, but Gladis is back for his seventh season leading the team and has all of the other top players from a year ago to work with. Lukash Klabnik is back as the No. 1 singles player and Arlen Sumersett is back at No.
2. Chris Parker has moved into the No. 3 slot and Evan Simmons and Will Smith round out the singles lineup.
Returning lettermen Chase Parker and Daniel Epstein have been pairing up to play No. 2 doubles. Eli Carone and Manny Cabeza are among the new members of the varsity squad who have seen action this season.
Summerville hosts Berkeley at 4 p.m. Monday, March 31, for Senior Night and Philip Simmons at 4 p.
