Concert-goers were outraged after the band’s pyrotechnics set a palm tree ablaze . The band are catching some heat for their use of the pyrotechnics during their performance at the Coachella Valley music and arts festival in California which took place the wake of the California wildfires that devastated the State. The band was wrapping up their headline set on Saturday night at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, near Palm Springs, when a firework went rogue and launched directly into the crowd, exploding and setting a palm tree aflame.
The fire was extinguished quickly, but festival-goers were shaken up. One social media user posted a video of the incident with the caption: "A firework just exploded next to me and all my friends at Coachella. I can’t hear out of my right ear, multiple people hurt.
That was f****** insane, I thought it was a terrorist attack.” In 2010, Green Day’s seventh studio album American Idiot was adapted into a Tony and Grammy-winning Broadway rock opera. Last year, a deluxe edition of the popular album was rereleased for its 20th anniversary.
Their upcoming album Saviors is released on May 23. The band's set was live-streamed on YouTube for fans at home, but those who were in the crowd witnessed the terrifying incident during the elaborate fireworks display first hand. This isn't the first time something like this has happened during a Green Day festival performance.
On July 7 2017, the group was headlining Madrid music festival Mad Cool when an acrobat fell almost 100 feet from a cage above the stage and died. Fans were upset that the band continued with the show, which saw an audience of about 35,000 people. At the start of the year, Wildfires wreaked havoc across Los Angeles, destroying numerous homes, including those of high-profile celebrities such as Mark Owen, Paris Hilton, and others.
The infernos forced the evacuation of thousands, with over 1,000 buildings and structures completely reduced to ash. Tragically, several lives have been lost in the fires, described by Paris Hilton as looking like "hell on earth." More than 130,000 people were evacuated, with celebrities taking to social media to share their heartbreaking losses.
High winds, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph, have further fuelled the flames and initially prevented firefighters from combating the blazes from the air. AccuWeather's early estimates suggest the blazes could be the nation's costliest ever, topping $250billion (£204billion). The reconstruction cost for commercial and residential properties inside areas with active fires could be $14.
8billion (£12billion), according to real estate data tracker CoreLogic..
