A Greater Manchester curry house and a city centre sushi place hailed a ‘Japanese paradise’ have been named amongst the big winners at a top Asian food awards. The Asian Curry Awards took place on Sunday evening (November 17) in London celebrating the best Asian restaurants and venues across the country. Dubbed the ‘Curry Oscars’, the awards recognise the best in terms of newcomers and long-standing favourites.
Big winners on the night included Kahani in London’s Sloane Square being named Fine Dining Restaurant of The Year, and Bournemouth’s Tiien Thai being recognised with the Thai Restaurant of The Year - but there was also plenty to be celebrated closer to home too. First opened three years ago, the Stamford Street East venue sells a range of Indian dishes, using fresh herbs and spices, including the likes of chicken Korma and prawn biryani.
The Tameside restaurant, bar and cocktail lounge also serves a signature Flaming Rajma - a medium-to-hot dish served with chicken or lamb tikka and garnished with Brandy. Earlier this year, Purple Olive was also nominated at the Manchester Curry Awards. Sushi Mami first opened in 2021 and has been named a 'Japanese paradise' (Image: Sushi Mami) Also winning at the prestigious awards ceremony was Sushi Mami, on Portland Street in the city centre, which was given the top honour of being named Japanese Restaurant of The Year. Dubbed a ‘Japanese paradise’, the all-you-can-eat sushi venue also first opened its doors three years ago and also sells a range of noodles, salad, fried rice dishes and teppanyaki - like teriyaki chicken and chilli king prawn - as well as classics like sweet and sour chicken.

(Image: Sushi Mami) One of the highlights of the Sushi Mami menu is Takoyaki - crispy balls filled with octopus - which has been described as a ‘must-try Japanese street food’. Reviews for the restaurant on TripAdvisor have described it as ‘an 'amazing place' with 'fantastic value'.
One reviewer posted earlier this month: "Great service. Great food, quick and efficient service. Definitely can't wait to come back for some more great food and drinks, both super affordable too!” Soho Spice in Bolton was also highly commended for the Casual Dining of The Year in the North West award, which was given to Kebabish Original in Blackburn.
