Celebrating its 20th anniversary, a Northamptonshire eatery, renowned for its massive 45-piece fry-up, emerged victorious in Fix Radio's first-ever Builder's Cafe of the Year contest. Over 10,000 voters participated in the eight-month-long battle, with winner securing victory by a slim margin of just 15 votes - its tightest competition yet. Corby's beloved greasy spoon, The Hungry Hossee, has officially clinched the title of Britain's top builder's cafe following a heated national competition.
Fix Radio, a favourite among builders, acknowledged the cafe's triumph by adorning its storefront with celebratory stickers, officially recognising its new status as the UK's favourite builder's cafe. Owner Shelaine Crabtree expressed her joy: "It feels absolutely amazing. Not only does it prove we're the best, but it's also going to put Corby, Northamptonshire, back on the map.
" She added: "The team here at The Hungry Hossee works incredibly hard, and this morale boost is so well-deserved. I believe the secret lies in patience and consistency. "The ambience is fantastic, and when you come in for a good breakfast, you'll get exactly the same experience the next time you return.
" This win underscores the treasured place that builder's cafes hold in the hearts of Brits. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed an impressive three quarters view their local café as the community's hub, with most wishing they could visit more frequently, reports the Mirror. Britons are willing to go the extra mile, quite literally, for their beloved breakfast fix, with an average trek of four miles to their preferred spot, and some even further.
"We have generations of customers now. I'm meeting children and grandchildren of our loyal patrons. We have visitors from all over the world - Vietnam, America, Australia - who always return and say hello," enthused Shelaine, a café owner whose establishment has become a global attraction.
When it comes to crafting the quintessential full English breakfast, the essentials are non-negotiable: eggs, sausages, and bacon reign supreme. Grilled tomatoes, cherished by 52 percent of diners, and hash browns, savoured by half, also score high on the breakfast popularity chart. However, black pudding tempts only 29 percent, while chips are chosen by a mere eight percent.
Jack Edwards, senior producer of the Bald Builders Breakfast radio show, highlighted the importance of local eateries, saying: "Independent cafes like The Hungry Hossee are vital to their communities, not only for the quality food they offer but for bringing builders, tradespeople, and locals together.".
