The US-led takeover of Rangers in a multi-million pound deal which is being backed by the financial might of the San Francisco 49ers - which would see the group take dual control of both the English Championship side and the Scottish Premiership giants. Record Sport understands the SFA have ‘no issues’ with the sensational buy out proposal - which could see Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe to take a seat on a new-look Ibrox board with the deal expected to be rubber stamped by June. And Souness, writing for The Daily Mail , has lauded the "passionate football club" at Elland Road after they moved to the Championship summit - before providing an ominous warning to the club.

He said: "I thoroughly enjoyed watching a game of football on Monday night, Leeds United against Sunderland. Two sides who will be seeing themselves as potential Premier League teams and with good reason. "Elland Road has always been a difficult place to go.

As a 19-year-old at Middlesbrough, I just caught the tail end of their great side of the 1970s and in more ways than one. I got hit with a challenge from Terry Yorath at Ayresome Park, it ruled me out for three months and gave me a lesson well learned as I was never caught again that badly. "Leeds has always been a passionate football club, which is what I like, and that's what made playing there such a great experience and so special.

Seeing over 36,000 roaring on their team on Monday, it was a proper game. "The caveat being, if they get into the Premier League they will have to have a more pragmatic and less cavalier approach to survive with the big boys. The comments come with the consortium behind United's push for the Premier League are also set to seal a takeover of Rangers in the coming months.

Souness has already made it clear how much he thinks should be enough to close the gap on Celtic - insisting that Gers need to splash £50million on up to four quality additions. In the wake of the 3-0 trouncing at the hands of Brendan Rodgers' side at the start of the campaign, the 71-year-old insisted: “Right now, there is gap between Rangers and Celtic, but it’s not insurmountable." He could finally be set to get his wish with mega money set to be put behind his former side - but UEFA's financial sustainability rules mean that spending on player and coach wages, transfers and agents fees is restricted this season to 70 per cent of a club's revenue from this summer.
