The Food Policy and Security Committee of the NPP had recommended importing rice again to meet a shortfall, the President’s Media Division (PMD) announced yesterday. The decision was taken at a meeting jointly chaired by Agriculture Minister K.D.

Lal Kantha and Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe. During the meeting, officials revealed that heavy rains had damaged crops on two occasions this year, significantly reducing the expected paddy harvest. The use of rice as animal feed was mentioned as a contributory factor to the shortage.



To mitigate this, the committee proposed importing broken rice to be used as animal feed..
