Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday that the Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to ride hailing apps Ola and Uber for alleged differential pricing. The development comes after several users complained on social media platforms claiming that Apple iPhone users are charged a higher fare by these cab aggregators compared to those using android-powered handsets. “As a follow-up to the earlier observation of apparent #DifferentialPricing based on the different models of mobiles (#iPhones/ #Android) being used, Department of Consumer Affairs through the CCPA has issued notices to major cab aggregators #Ola and #Uber, seeking their responses,” Joshi tweeted on social media platform X.
Last month, Joshi had said that there will be “zero tolerance on exploitation of consumers. This was in response to social media reports of difference in prices between iPhone and Android users on ride-hailing apps for the same journey. “This prima facie looks like an unfair trade practice where cab aggregators are allegedly using differential pricing based on factors mentioned in the article.
If true, this is a blatant disregard for the consumer’s right to know,” he had said in a post on X. He had also ordered an inquiry into similar practices on food delivery and online ticket booking platforms. “I have directed @jagograhakjago, through the CCPA, to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report at the earliest.
The department has also been asked to examine other sectors, such as food delivery and online ticket booking apps,” the Minister had said in a post on X. Comments.
