New York's clean energy horizon is seeing a new dawn as Governor Kathy Hochul confirms the New York Power Authority's (NYPA) acquisition, of a major solar energy endeavor. The 20 megawatt (MW) Somers Solar project, lodged in Fort Edward in Washington County, is NYPA's inaugural renewable energy venture under its newfound authority, as reported by the Governor's recent announcement . In a statement obtained by the Governor's Office , Hochul expressed that “The project reflects New York’s efforts to create a greener, more resilient energy system that benefits all New Yorkers, and demonstrates our focus on driving economic growth in local communities while creating good-paying union jobs.
” NYPA's CEO Justin E. Driscoll further detailed their operation plans, saying, “Our first new renewable energy project as part of NYPA’s expanded authority will be the 100% NYPA-owned and NYPA-operated 20 MW Somers Solar project in Washington County. Our role is to bring this project to execution and ensure its efficient and safe operation for generations; that is what NYPA does best.
” The venture will take place located on a 150-acre site approximately 50 miles north of Albany, promising to spawn over 100 union jobs. The NYPA Renewables Strategic Plan, unveiled earlier this year, charts a course for a spurt in renewable sources, with a 3 gigawatt potential boost set on New York's energy stage. CS Energy, the originally designated developers of Somers Solar, believe this reinscription of ownership enables them to inject their resources back into the renewable niche.
CS Energy's Chief Commercial Officer Eric Millard, in a statement shared with the public, affirmed their dedication to building a clean and sustainable future that aligns with the state's loftier energy objectives. As part of the 2023-24 Enacted State Budget, NYPA now wields the power to expedite renewable energy development, upskill the workforce, and steer the state towards an emission-free economy by 2050—evident in NYPA's recent $100 million bond issuance for renewables and the creation of NYRED, a subsidiary to maneuver external capital, and safeguard against project tribulations. The strategic plan, which absorbed input from thousands across New York, lists 37 projects and carves the trajectory for NYPA's efforts over the upcoming years.
Assemblymember Didi Barrett claimed NYPA's ownership ensures affordable energy for New Yorkers alongside notable climate goals, while Assemblymember Carrie Woerner celebrated the prospect of additional employment and cleaner energy for the local community's benefit, as detailed by the Governor's Office. New York's climate plan focuses on making the transition to clean energy affordable and fair, ensuring at least 35% of the benefits go to disadvantaged communities. The plan addresses key sectors like energy, buildings, transportation, and waste to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
