Hundreds of new nursery places will be available from September across Yorkshire and the Humber, as the government has announced the first wave of 300 school-based nurseries. A spokesperson for the government's Department for Education said: "The measures will help parents get to work, increasing access to childcare when they need it, and support the government’s promise to put more cash in their pockets. "The rollout of 30 government-funded hours of childcare from September will save parents up to £7,500 on average, while £450 per year will be saved through free breakfast clubs in schools.
"Funding for the programme has been more than doubled to £37 million — marking an important milestone in the expanded childcare rollout. "Alongside introducing universal free breakfast clubs in all primary schools, the government’s plans will ensure children of all ages start the day ready to learn." Education secretary Bridget Phillipson said: "Delivering on our promise of a better early years system is my top priority, which is why we’ve more than doubled our investment in this first phase so thousands more children can benefit from a high-quality early education from this September.
" Thirty-five of these sites are being funded in Yorkshire and the Humber, with schools in areas such as Hull, Doncaster, and North Yorkshire backed to build new or expanded provision, according to a spokesperson. Jess Storch, headteacher at St Antony's VC Academy, Hull, said: "Having an all year round school-based nursery will, we believe, not only help our children in their transition to primary education but also be a very practical option for families with older children at the school. "It really enhances the support we can provide.
" As part of "wider work to break down barriers to opportunity for every family," per a spokesperson, providers are also due to benefit from an uplift in the Early Years Pupil Premium..
