The government’s betrayal of WASPI women hit by a rise in the state pension age is yet another bad decision, following the cuts to the winter fuel allowance. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall and PM Keir Starmer are turning their backs on 3.5 million women by rejecting an ombudsman’s recommendation to pay them compensation of between £1,000 and £2,950 each.
It is another nail in the coffin of Labour’s promise to restore trust in politics. Yes, the issue was left by do-nothing Tories, alongside the combined £12billion costs of the infected blood and Post Office scandals. Yet prominent Labour figures, including Kendall and Starmer, expressed sympathy in opposition and then let down the WASPI women in office, which is unacceptable.
This government is doing a lot that is good – improving job rights and reviving the NHS. But cheating WASPI women of justice and compensation is a call that should be reversed. Sara’s legacy Sadistic Urfan Sharif will be 83 before he is free from the minimum jail term of 40 years he must serve for murdering his daughter Sara.
Good. Stepmother Beinash Batool received a minimum term of 33 years, so will be free when she is 63, and uncle Faisal Malik will be 45 if he serves the full 16 years for causing or allowing Sara’s death. The heavy sentences reflect the barbaric cruelty Sara suffered.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson is right to change the law in England so violent parents cannot automatically take children out of school to cover up abuse by pretending to educate them at home. It could be a lasting safeguard that protects other vulnerable children like Sara. Spoty-on Former boxer Mark Prince won a Sports Personality of the Year special award for supporting other bereaved parents after his footballer son Kiyan was murdered.
