AS USUAL, the Goroka Show 2024 in Eastern Highlands Province showcased a lot of attractions to international tourists and visitors from across the country. They were simply awed at the display of unique cultural heritage by performing groups in the show arena, arts and craft and potentials in agriculture and SMEs in flora and fauna. While the tide of crowd flowed towards the amphitheater on field two where Mikes Toto, Goroka’s very own, HLP, and local talents belted out their hits, the tourists and visitors, enjoyed the performance by the cultural groups in field one within the National Sports Institute premise.
They took photos of all the performing groups in the show arena. Among them is a lone batman from Kemase in Lufa district. All in black paint with wings on his back and horns on the head and imitating bats’ moves, the batman attracted some tourists and visitors to take selfies with him.
One of the groups that attracted much attention was one whose members, in gray paint with black stripes, performed rare moves around their lead figure, who was crowned with a musk decorated with plumes of rare birds’ feathers and. A toddler carried away in childish moves in front of the members of another group, all in gray with grass skirts and tapa wraparounds at their waists, was another centre attention. In the purest of their traditional attires, the performing groups swayed away the Papua New Guinea’s 49th year of independence in tune with their kundu beats and traditional songs.
Some tourists and visitors were seeing swaying with few singsing groups while others asked their friends to take photos with the groups or simply took selfies. They were so absorbed in the hype of the show that it was time to leave before they knew it..
