The charges are imposed on bill payments such as electricity and gas bills made using the platform. The fee ranges from 0.5% to 1% plus GST.
The UPI platform’s move came after other platforms such as PhonePe and Paytm had introduced the convenience fee for the same. Earlier the platform did not charge for low-value transactions. Though the sudden change has sparked debate, Google Pay’s website, however, specifies that the convenience fee only applies to card payments.
