Google is bringing the simple, fast, and efficient Pixel 9 initial setup or migration process to other non-Pixel Android smartphones. This means Android device makers can offer a sleeker initial setup for their phones with deferred data transfer. Pixel 9 OOB initial setup to be available on non-Pixel devices Setting up a new phone is exciting.
However, the process can also be dreadful for those who are upgrading, or migrating from iOS. For most Android phone users, the initial setup is a one-time process. However, it can be confusing or time-consuming for many, as most Android users don’t set up new devices often.
Google has been steadily improving the initial OOB (Out of Box) setup process for Android devices. The Pixel smartphones, particularly the latest Pixel 9 series , has a much-improved setup process. Google has confirmed that this process will be available to non-Pixel Android devices as well.
Google’s Android Switch app to make initial setup or migration simpler The initial setup of an Android phone typically involves signing into a Google account. This is followed by transferring data from an older device or an iPhone. Moving forward, Google will help in the initial setup and migration process using the Android Switch app.
The app can reportedly allow Android users to start the setup process and let them choose to setup with an “Express” option or make it more “Custom.” As the name indicates the Express option is the fastest and has the least number of options. The Custom option offers a lot of granular control.
If users choose the Express option, the Android Switch app will quickly proceed to download most of the data that users have backed up from the cloud. The app will then look at the old device to bring over other items that remain on the device; and aren’t in the cloud. Specifically speaking, the Express option can delay gathering multiple items to allow quicker access to the new Android device.
Essentially, Google has allowed Pixel 9 users to transfer their data over to their new device anytime after the initial setup . This facility will now be available to non-Pixel phones. Android smartphones from other brands will eventually have the “Bring data from another device,” option in the phone’s settings page.
Needless to say, this option will continue to exist after the initial setup process is complete. It is important to note that Android users will need access to the older device for this feature to work at a later date. The Android Switch app relies on QR codes to authenticate the devices.
Google has indicated these features are “coming to more Android phone makers in 2025.” Android Switch (Google Play Store).
