Golden Globes 2025: Stars, creatives react to nominations

You know it is the start of the awards season when you have to wake up at the crack of dawn to attend the nominations announcement for the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. This year, actress-writer-producer Mindy Kaling and actor Morris Chestnut presented the nominees for each of the 27 award categories at a press conference. Executive producer Barry Adelman and Golden Globe president Helen Hoehne introduced the two actor-presenters.

Hoehne also announced that ahead of the awards show which will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2025, there will be three new pre-events: the Golden Globes First-Time Nominee Celebration (a luncheon celebrating first-time nominees that will take place on December 17, 2024 at The Maybourne hotel in Beverly Hills), the Gala Dinner (the event that will be held on January 3, 2025 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel to recognize the Cecil B. DeMille Award winner and the Carol Burnet Award winner) and the star-studded Golden Eve Party which will return on January 4, 2025. There are 26 first-time Golden Globe nominees this year and some of those included in this group are Ariana Grande, Dakota Fanning, Glen Powell, Jesse Plemons, Kathryn Hahn, Pamela Anderson, Seth Meyers and Zoe Saldana to name a few.



Steve Martin is nominated for his fourth consecutive year for Best Television Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series for "Only Murders in the Building" and his ninth overall Golden Globe nomination. This could be his first-ever win. Kate Winslet ("Lee" and "The Regime"), Sebastian Stan ("The Apprentice" and "A Different Man"), and Selena Gomez ("Emilia Perez" and "Only Murders in the Building") are all double nominees.

For the first time, Jesse Eisenberg is nominated for his first non-acting role for Best Screenplay for "A Real Pain." With his 11th nomination, Denzel Washington is the most-nominated Black performer for the Golden Globes. "Emilia Perez" star Karla Sofía Gascón made history with her nomination in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy category, becoming the first transgender woman to be recognized in the category.

"Emilia Pérez" is also the most-nominated film of this year's slate of nominees with 10 total nominations. In the television category, "The Bear" led with five nominations. Viola Davis, acclaimed actress-producer and Golden Globe winner, will be honored with the Cecil B.

DeMille Award which has been bestowed on 69 honorees drawn from Hollywood's greatest and most iconic talents, including Walt Disney, Jack Warner, Sidney Poitier, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand and Oprah Winfrey. Ted Danson, Emmy Award and Golden Globe-winning actor, will be honored with the Carol Burnett Award which is presented to an honoree who has made outstanding contributions to television on or off screen. Dubbed as the "Hollywood's Party of the Year," the Globes will be hosted by comedienne-actress Nikki Glaser, the first woman to host the Globes solo.

Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment (WCE) will return as executive producing showrunners. This year's show also kicks off the new five-year deal between CBS and the Golden Globes. The Globes, which has 334 voting members representing 85 countries, will be viewed on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at 5:00 pm PT/8:00 pm ET on CBS and stream on Paramount+ in the US.

Dick Clark Productions will plan, host and produce the 82nd Annual Golden Globes which will be viewed in more than 185 countries and territories worldwide. This year's votes were tabulated by KPMG. The stars and creatives have reacted to their early-morning Golden Globe nominations and below are some of their reactions.

ANORA Sean Baker (Director, Writer, Producer) Can you talk about your amazing journey with "Anora," starting in Cannes where we first saw the film? This was in May. Why do you think "Anora" is resonating with people and is staying on their minds? It's been quite a ride. We are still processing the Cannes win as the film continues to roll out in the world, so we are truly discombobulated (in a good way).

We are just so grateful for the interest and love we are receiving from audiences around the world. The Golden Globe nominations are the cherries on the top! We never thought that our little indie would speak to so many. We first met you in Cannes at the screening of the restored version of "Bona" by the late Lino Brocka, whom you admire, as we learned.

Can you talk about your shared passion with Brocka to tell the stories of marginalized people? Outside of genre cinema that crossed over, I had little exposure to Philippine cinema until I saw Lino Brocka's "Manila in the Claws of Light" ("Manila, Sa Kuko ng Liwanag") when I was in my mid-twenties. Brocka presented subject matter that I am very interested in (such as sex work) in a social-realist style that brought a ground reality and empathy. I immediately felt a kinship with Brocka as a filmmaker.

I knew of "Bona" but never saw it as I was holding out for a restoration. Thankfully it has happened, and I was able to see it presented at Cannes this year. "Bona" is another important and truly impactful work of Brocka's oeuvre with an ending that will forever stay with me.

I am deeply humbled, honored and absolutely overjoyed to be recognized by the Golden Globes. Working with Sean Baker and to be nominated alongside such deeply talented actresses is a dream come true. My entire career as an actress I dreamed of working with someone like Sean and to play such a complex and spirited character like Ani.

I share my celebrations and joy with Yura, Sean, Alex, Sammy, and the entire cast and crew of Anora. Thank you to everyone who has uplifted and supported our indie and seen it in theaters! Yura Borisov I'm honored to be nominated for a Golden Globe alongside performers I deeply admire. I am humbled to be recognized for this role in my first English-language film.

Thank you for all of your support in the film and I celebrate this with Sean, Mikey and the entire cast. "Anora" is a feeling, a film about how hope and love can connect humans in the most unexpected of ways, and it has been the honor of a lifetime to see audiences connect with the film across the globe. SEPTEMBER 5 Tim Fehlbaum (Writer, Director, Producer) We are so grateful to the Golden Globes for recognizing our film with a Best Picture - Drama nomination.

At its core, this is a film about journalists and the moral and ethical decisions that needed to be made in the moment when their coverage shifted from sports reporting to a live terrorist attack. This nomination is extra meaningful coming directly from journalists around the world. We are deeply grateful.

A REAL PAIN Jesse Eisenberg (Writer, Director, Actor, Producer) I am thrilled and honored and surprised to be acknowledged so generously by the Golden Globes. And if anyone can track down the mercurial Kieran Culkin, please give him a hug for me and congratulate him as well! A COMPLETE UNKNOWN James Mangold (Director, Writer, Producer) I am thrilled to celebrate my friends Timothee Chalamet and Edward Norton's well-deserved Globe nominations for their brilliant portrayals of Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger in our film "A Complete Unknown." And, of course, I'm also honored to share a Best Dramatic Picture nomination with my producing partners Fred Berger and Alex Heineman.

Our film attempts to reanimate a glorious moment in time and the unique young artists whose poetry, passion and independent thinking still resonate around the world 60 years later. Congratulations and love to all! Timothee Chalamet What a tremendous honor to be included in this very talented group of actors this morning. "A Complete Unknown" was a five-year labor of love for me, so it is very moving to receive this distinction.

While on the surface 1960s Greenwich Village would look to have little in common with Arrakis, it was the open-mindedness and groundbreaking culture of the 1960s in America that has ultimately given birth to these projects some 60 years later. Thank you! Edward Norton I think in truth this is a compliment to our whole terrific ensemble of actors, which Timothee led so brilliantly. And if it helps connect more people to the inspiring life and spirit of Pete Seeger, even better.

And since for me Denzel Washington is the greatest actor of our time, it's a thrill even to see my name adjacent to his for one morning! We all walk in his shadow. Producers of "A Complete Unknown" On behalf of the team behind "A Complete Unknown," we are beyond grateful for today's Golden Globe nominations! Bob Dylan's enduring legacy, which has been a profound inspiration to so many around the globe for over half a century, fueled all of the artists who came together to tell this story. GLADIATORS II Denzel Washington Before I even worked with Sir Ridley Scott, I was a fan of his movies and his talent. But then he invited me into his tent (most recently into his Colosseum of "Gladiator II") and the entire experience was stunning. The sheer size of this particular production and the incredible cast of actors and crew he assembled, not to mention what he literally built of ancient Rome, humbles me – it humbled me every day on set.

And giving me Macrinus – to embody, to enjoy, to create – what an incredible honor this is, and has been. EMILIA PEREZ Karla Sofia Gascon This has been an overwhelming morning. Tears filled my eyes when I heard the news.

I want to thank all the members of the Golden Globes for this nomination. It's incredible to be recognized alongside my costars. I'm so grateful to Jacques for the gift of Emilia.

We couldn't have created the world of EMILIA PÉREZ without the amazing artistic technical team on the film. Thank you to Netflix and to all of you who support me and live with my successes as if they were yours. This nomination gives me hope for humanity.

Congratulations to Zendaya on her nomination and everyone involved with the film. LEE Kate Winslet I'm beyond grateful for this nomination. Making "Lee" meant the world to me, so to be acknowledged for playing a brave complicated woman who did so much to be a voice for the voiceless, is something that brings me incredible pride.

And to be included this year, among all these exceptional performances is deeply humbling. And huge thanks to the Golden Globes for giving all of us who worked on The Regime an additional nomination! Wow! NICKEL BOYS RaMell Ross (Director, Writer) Thank you to the Golden Globe journalists for recognizing this experiential, communal monument of a film we have made. There is no film without Colson Whitehead's masterpiece of a novel, The Nickel Boys.

Thank you for giving us Elwood and Turner, and their unbreakable friendship. Thank you to our producers and Orion Pictures for the freedom they allowed our department heads, cast and crew to tell this story just the way we did. I am so grateful to each and every one of them, every cast and crew member.

I can't name them all, so for the entire group, I will acknowledge Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who as Grandma Hattie, is the heart of our film. The tragedy of the real-life Nickel Boys, the wards of The Dozier Academy, is not just one of mid-century Florida. The tragedy was the conspiracy of silence that buried their memories with their bodies.

So, this honor from journalists from over 85 countries bearing witness to their humanity is very special. CONCLAVE Isabella Rossellini I have just learned that I was nominated for the very prestigious Golden Globe as best supporting actress for our film "Conclave." Right now, all I can think of is my parents Roberto Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman and feeling grateful I am their daughter.

The words from the prayer "honor the father and the mother," roam around my brain, making me feel proud of myself. My heart also skips a few beats when I think to all the wonderful talent who made "Conclave." First of all, Edward Berger and Ralph Fiennes.

I need a bit of time to find the right words to thank the voting members of the Golden Globes for this great honor. Edward Berger (Director) It's a real honor to be acknowledged by the Golden Globes in this way. Being a part of this project has been a dream come true, and playing Elphaba, a woman who speaks to everyone who has ever felt like they don't belong and lets them know they have the power to defy gravity, has been the honor of a lifetime.

"La Máquina" is Hulu's first Spanish-language series, so to see it resonate around the world in this way is extremely moving to us all.

Let it be the first of many. Its success is a reminder that audiences are wanting global stories told authentically and in their native languages. SQUID GAME Season 2 Hwang Dong-Hyuk (Showrunner/Creator) I feel immensely grateful that my show, yet to-be-released, has been nominated at such a prestigious award ceremony. I poured everything into this work determined not to let the season one fans down, and I feel so excited and happy that it was the Golden Globes that was the first to recognize my efforts. When you watch season two, you will notice that the social commentary you've found in the first season continues on.

I believe the show will provide more food for thought when you try to draw parallels to what's happening in the current society. BABY REINDEER Richard Gadd I am beyond thrilled that "Baby Reindeer" has been nominated for three Golden Globes. Almost every year, I have watched the event hoping that one day I might be there in the audience, sitting amongst the industry's finest, getting roasted on an international scale.

So, it is a dream come true. Thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press for all they have done in championing the show.
