Ajay Kumar Sood, the principal scientific advisor to the Government of India, claimed that the country will soon have its own LLM rivaling the likes of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The Bengaluru-based physicist, who holds 2 United States patents and 5 Indian patents, claimed that India already possesses a foundation model with 2 billion parameters. Speaking with the press, Dr.
Sood remarked, “The idea is to enlarge it now that we have the compute resources. ” Commenting about the AI race, the scientist further argued that, “We should not be copying others. ” He was remarking on the rivalry with Chinese AI DeepSeek as well.
He emphasized that India must work on sector-specific LLMs “ rather than blindly follow .” The internet was brutal while reacting to India’s scientific adviser's remarks on the ChatGPT-like indigenous AI model. One user jibed, “ Dear scientific advisor, please look at the EPFO and IRCTC websites; it's okay even if you copy but fix that first.
It's been 11 years and counting .” Another user took potshots at India’s babudom, stating, “ In India, Sarkari Babus' are omnipotent. Soon, the Gormint will launch an AI " app—"Babu Gyaan.
" Will be 1000 times superior to ChatGPT, Deepseek, Grok, Perplexity etc.” Yet another user tried to make sense of why a physicist is giving gyaan on AI: “ First of all, get a technologist as well for advisory; Ajay is a physicist and is known for nanotechnology vs. neural network architectures; it's like going to a doctor for advice on car engine knocking.
” One irate user quipped, Waste of time and resources. In spite of its alleged IT prowess, even the Indian private sector hasn't produced any software or app, that has had global impact and adoption. It's unlikely that any AI project stewarded by GOI, would fare better.
