Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc., through its shared services and outsourcing arm Asticom Technology Inc., has piloted a laser communications system which is designed to deliver “fiber-like connectivity” in Bulacan.

Developed by Singapore-based Transcelestial Technologies Pte. Ltd., the laser communications system is said to be a “cost-efficient and rapidly deployable” option to conventional fiber optics that can expand 4G or 5G coverage.

Globe used Transcelestial’s proprietary CENTAURI device during the trial which was held at an event in the Philippine Arena in Bulacan. This served as an invisible laser connection network between buildings and solutions such as Globe’s Cell Site on Wheels (COW). “Laser communications hold immense promise for the future of high-speed, reliable connectivity, particularly in areas where deploying physical infrastructure is difficult or impractical,” Globe Service Planning and Engineering head Joel Agustin said.

“With Transcelestial’s innovation, we are not only enabling faster deployment but also enhancing the overall network experience for our customers,” he added. Globe said the efficiency and potential of the solution were validated through network performance metrics and incident reports that were gathered throughout the test. “This collaboration is a prime example of how the telecom industry is evolving, moving towards more agile, efficient, and scalable solutions that can meet the ever-growing demand for high-speed connectivity,” Transcelestial co-founder and chief technology officer Mohammad Danesh said.

Globe targets to grow its top line by up to mid-single-digit levels this year, after posting a record-high P162.3-billion consolidated revenue in 2023. — BM, GMA Integrated News.
