Pune: Technical glitches in the updated centralised civil registration system (CRS) have hit the issuance of birth and death certificates across the state over the past few days, leaving applicants hassled. An official from one of the registration centres in Maharashtra said they were unable to issue certificates for three to four days because of glitches. “Citizens are peeved as they are doing rounds of registration offices for several days,” the official said.
According to the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, all reported births and deaths in the country occurring from Oct 1, 2023, have to be digitally registered through the Centre’s portal dc.crorgi.gov.

Later, I re-submitted it with the help of an official. I am yet to receive the certificate. It has been more than a month,” she told TOI.
“We’ve raised this issue with the central govt. We hope the system will be streamlined for once and for all by next month,” an official from the state civil registration system office told TOI. Officials cited slow portal speed, delayed OTP generation, and frequent error messages as key problems, causing significant backlogs in issuing certificates.
State officials said besides Maharashtra, several other states reported these teething issues after the CRS portal was revamped. “We moved to the updated portal in June and there have been teething issues since then. We have reported the issues to the central authorities, who are working on them.
We hope the system will start functioning properly from Oct and there will be no delay in delivery of services,” a state govt official from the civil registration system office said. A central govt official said thousands of certificates were being generated through the portal daily. He said, “As when a state migrates to the new system, it may face issues because of the revamp of the new system.
