fairlea — A tie this time would have meant overtime and possibly penalty kicks. Greenbrier East made sure it didn’t come to that. Ava Workman’s goal in the 70th minute put the Spartans ahead in a tight game and they made it hold for a 2-1 win over Oak Hill for the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 championship.
East took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute when Caroline Dotson took the pass from Workman and got the ball just past the Oak Hill keeper at the front right post. That’s where it would stay until halftime, before Oak Hill knotted things up 17 minutes into the second half. Jada Wilburn delivered a corner kick that went through the East keeper’s hands.
Tayler Sizemore was in the right place to knock it in for the equalizer. The teams tied in both of their regular season meetings. The Spartans assured there would be no need to go beyond 80 minutes in the playoff game.
Dotson passed the ball to Workman to the left of the goal, and she fired it in to the right side for what would prove to be the game-winner. The Spartans (16-3-2) will play for the Region 3 championship Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
