BLOOMFIELD — Nobody on the Davis County girls basketball team has more experience than Cassidy Van Laningham. The only senior for the Mustangs certainly had a Senior Night to remember on Tuesday. Van Laningham scored a career-high 22 points while grabbing seven of Davis County's 28 steals in a 74-22 South Central Conference win over Cardinal.
Van Laningham's Senior Night got off to a strong start with 10 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists in the opening quarter. Davis County used a flurry of steals to pull away midway through the opening quarter, scoring the final 11 points of the period opening a 25-7 lead over the Comets. Van Laningham was the only player to reach double figures in scoring before halftime, scoring 16 points in the first two quarters.
Defensively, the Mustangs continued to stymie Cardinal allowing just one point in the second quarter and just three made field goals on 17 attempts in the entire first half opening a 45-8 lead. Four players reached double figures in scoring for Davis County on Tuesday. Halle Husted added 13 points, including nine points in the first half, while Mayson Utt and Ella Day came off the bench to produce impressive efforts for the Mustangs.
Utt hit five of six field goal attempts, finishing with 11 points sinking a shot late in the fourth quarter on a feed from Day to reach double figures. Day, before dishing to Utt, sank a 3-pointer on Davis County's previous possession giving the Mustang sophomore a career-high 10 points in the contest. Kolbi Saner and Erika Haines each scored eight points to pace Cardinal in the contest.
The Comets scored 10 points in both the second and third quarters, including a seven-point run early in the second half including five points from Haines as well as a steal, offensive rebound and assist by Saner to Kaylin Hissem. Cardinal (0-15, 0-10 SCC) hosts Albia on Friday night while Davis County (8-10, 6-5 SCC) heads to Osceola to take on Clarke..
