YOUNG Susan Kevin stood out amongst her team mates in the recently concluded PNG Lawn Bowls Women’s National Fours Open event hosted at the Defence Bowling Club in Port Moresby over the weekend. Playing in one of the two Bisini Bowls Club teams, the 10-year-old acquitted herself well amongst a host of experienced players. She was introduced to the code by grandparents Kamu Walo and Rebecca Walo, who are regular bowlers themselves.

She said her interest was built up from following her grandparents, aunties and uncles to the bowling club each weekend. “I used to follow my bubus, who bowl for the Bisini Bowling Club. “My first competition was last year and I am slowly getting the hang of it.

“I enjoy the challenge and I am hooked on lawn bowls,” she added. The youngster divides her time from school, while spending her weekends at the Bisini Bowling Club, refining her newfound skills. “Right now, am not considering any other sports.

“I want to get better with bowls,” she added. Mum, Theodora Joseph, said her daughter started playing when she was an eight-year-old in 2023. “She’s a keen player and always follows the family to and from training.

“Her grandparents, aunties, uncles and cousins all play the game.” Susan’s uncle, Kamu Walo, is also the national coach for Bowls PNG. So, it’s basically in the blood for this promising youngster, who hails from Hula and Kairuku in the Central province.

Susan is a grade five student at Ted Diro Primary School..
