He’s currently starring in Akaal, a Punjabi action-drama that he not only acted in but also wrote and directed. Released in theatres on April 10 in both Punjabi and Hindi, Akaal marks a significant moment for regional cinema, as it’s backed by none other than Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions—making it their first-ever foray into Punjabi films. The film follows the gripping story of Sardar Akaal Singh, played by Gippy, who must defend his village from the vengeful army of Jangi Jahan (Nikitin Dheer) after the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
Set in a politically charged and emotional landscape, the film explores themes of leadership, sacrifice, and resilience. It also stars singer-actor Nimrat Khaira in the lead female role, whose performance adds depth to the historical drama. Gippy shared that Akaal is close to his heart, both as an artist and as someone who’s passionate about taking Punjabi stories to a broader audience.
“With Akaal, we wanted to tell a story that’s rooted in history, but feels personal and powerful," he’s said in earlier interviews. “It’s a story of strength, of protecting what’s ours, and of rising together.".
