He doesn’t mind being the wide receiver in the wintertime. Gilson made four 3-pointers to reach 200 for his career as the Niskayuna boys’ basketball team defeated CBA 63-52 in a Suburban Council game on Friday night. The fourth one was unassisted, as the senior guard dribbled downcourt in transition and pulled up halfway between the “N” logo and the top of the 3-point arc and launched one that gave Niskayuna 46-29 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Gilson’s first three on the night, though, were a product of kickout passes from junior point guard Daniel Smalls, who finished with 30 points, while Gilson scored 17. “I try to be a little more of a vocal leader [in basketball], that quarterback style, but, yeah, the way everything shuts down and he’s able to get his own shots and get shots for his teammates, absolutely he’s the quarterback, and it’s so much fun playing with him,” Gilson said. Gilson didn’t hit his first 3 until late in the first half, giving Niskayuna a 28-15 lead on the way to a 30-17 edge at halftime.
The Brothers cut it to five, 33-28 in the third quarter, but Niskayuna reasserted full control with a 13-1 run to close the period that included two 3-s by Gilson and seven points from Smalls. “It doesn’t really matter to me. If I’m open, I’m going to put a shot up,” Gilson said, of his 3 from deep.
“Sometimes I’ll miss my opportunities, but I’m confident that every time I put the ball up, it’s going to go in.” “It was a big game, live TV, and it’s really nice to play well and get a milestone like that, something I’ve been working toward for my entire life, all the hours getting shots up. It’s something I take a lot of pride in.
” “He had broken that last year, so everything else is gravy,” Niskayuna head coach Mike Grasso said. “I’m very happy for him.” Niskayuna improved to 9-1 in the Suburban Council and 12-4 overall.
J.J. Osinski scored 25 points to lead the Brothers (6-2, 9-5).
“To hold that team right around 50 points is really tough,” Grasso said..
