The New York Giants lost a winnable Week 2 game on Sunday because kicker Graham Gano pulled his hamstring on the opening kickoff. Gano had popped up on the injury report with a groin injury the day prior, but had been given the green light. New York didn’t activate kicker Jude McAtamney as an insurance policy.

It cost them. The Giants lost, 21-18. They were unable to kick field goals.

Joseph had been on the Detroit Lions practice squad. Now in Year 7 of his NFL career, Joseph spent the last three years with the Minnesota Vikings, where he converted 83 of 101 field goals and 112 of 124 extra points. Notably, Joseph is only 15-of-26 from 50+ yards over the course of his career, something that may play into the Giants’ plans.

Signing Joseph, rather than a more temporary activation of McAtamney, likely signifies a stint on injured reserve for Gano, giving him time to fully recover and be patient with the soft-tissue injury that could have been related to his groin flare-up. Barring catastrophe, Joseph will be New York’s kicker until Gano returns, giving them some semblance of stability after Week 2’s chaos.
