The New York Giants prepare to host the division-leading Washington Commanders in a pivotal Week 9 matchup at MetLife Stadium. Having fallen to Washington in Week 2, the Giants (2-6) look to turn the tables on their NFC East rival and gain ground in the standings. However, questions surrounding the offensive line, especially the role of former first-round pick Evan Neal, have taken center stage as head coach Brian Daboll faces scrutiny over his personnel decisions.
© John Jones-USA TODAY Sports During his recent press conference, Daboll was asked about Neal, the seventh overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and his limited role on the offensive line. While Neal began the season as the starting right tackle, he has since been replaced by Jermaine Eluemunor. Daboll explained the switch.
"I wouldn't say he's not in the mix. He's worked some jumbo stuff for us, and based on how things are going, or an injury, he'd be one of the next guys in." said Daboll.
The head coach emphasized that Eluemunor earned his starting spot and has consistently met expectations on the right side of the line. Reporters pressed further, questioning why Neal hadn’t reclaimed his position and if moving Eluemunor to left tackle might be beneficial given Chris Hubbard’s recent struggles. Daboll defended his current lineup.
"Hubbard's played 58 games, or 59 after the Pittsburgh game. Has good experience and has some familiarity with what we do." continued Daboll.
New York’s offensive line has demonstrated some efficiency in both pass and run blocking, ranking with a pass-blocking win rate of 59 percent and a run-blocking rate of 71 percent ( ESPN ). However, they have allowed quarterback Daniel Jones to be sacked 25 times through just eight games. The Commanders’ defense, which boasts a 46 percent pass-rush win rate but struggles against the run with a 29 percent success rate, could offer the Giants’ offense a path to success if they maintain strong blocking and open opportunities for Jones.

With the potential absence of lead rusher Tyrone Tracy Jr., who remains in concussion protocol, the Giants may turn to veteran Devin Singletary to fill the gap, further emphasizing the importance of Daboll’s trusted lineup to establish momentum.
