Gov. Greg Gianforte on Wednesday began soliciting applications to replace district court Judge Katherine Bidegaray following her election to the Montana Supreme Court. Bidegaray currently presides over the Seventh Judicial District, which includes Dawson, McCone, Prairie, Richland and Wibaux counties.
She was first elected to the bench there in 2002. With her election on Nov. 5, she will replace Justice Dirk Sandefur, who is retiring.
Montana Chief Justice Mike McGrath on Monday officially notified Gianforte of the upcoming vacancy on Jan.5, triggering the process for the governor to appoint Bidegaray's successor. Gianforte's office said in a press release that applications must be submitted by 5 p.
m. on Dec. 16.
The public comment period for applicants will be open from Dec. 17 through Jan. 16.
Applicants must receive at least three letters of support to be considered by the governor..
