Cleaning an oven door is one of the most dreaded household chores as grease can become baked onto the glass and feel impossible to remove no matter how much you scrub at it. However, once you notice brown stains on a glass door, it is important to clean it as soon as possible as bacteria can build up in this area and make an oven unhygienic to cook with. Luckily, Laura, a cleaning expert and founder of Our Oily House has shared that rather than use a harsh commercial cleaner it is “safer and healthier” to simply use baking soda instead.

She said: “There are times when an oven is so dirty that fat and grime are stuck fast after months of use. “When this happens, I recommend using a baking soda and water paste mixture.” It may sound odd, but baking soda is highly effective at removing grease as it is mildly alkaline, which means it can break down acidic food stains and dissolve them.

Baking soda is also very absorbent which means it will loosen any baked-on grime on the oven door to make it incredibly easy to clean. How to make a natural homemade oven cleaner using baking soda 120g of baking soda Three tablespoons of water Salt Soft-bristled brush Cleaning cloth To begin, mix the baking soda and water together in a bowl until it forms a paste. Put on a pair of cleaning gloves and coat the whole oven door with the paste.

Sprinkle salt and baking soda over any particularly stained areas as they will help loosen up the grime. Then leave the oven door alone and wait at least one hour minutes for the baking soda to begin breaking down the stains. Once the time is up, use a brush to easily get rid of the grease, then rinse the oven door with clean water and dry it with a cloth.

You can clean your whole oven using this formula, but be careful not to get any water or homemade solution on the heating element..
