” Later The IAA changed the purpose of the celebration. It became a day for artists and art lovers to celebrate the importance of art in the world as well as to bring artists, aspiring artists, and art enthusiasts together. The IAA began in 1954; it got its start as a partnership agency through the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the purpose of learning about artistic freedoms as well as associating artists together with UNESCO’s work.

The IAA began World Art Day in 2012, and it was then adopted by UNESCO in 2019. The Canadian Artists Representation/Le Front Des Artistes Canadian (CARFAC) provides benefits for artists across Canada. They also play a big role in providing legal rights for artists.

Their current project is “The Artist’s Resale Right,” an initiative to provide artists with five per cent of the profits when their art gets resold. Becoming a member of the CARFAC provides you with lots of supports towards your career as an artist. One of Neelin High School’s art teachers, Melanie McComb, expresses that it’s important to celebrate World Art Day because, “Our lives are busy, and we constantly feel the pull of things we ‘have to do.

’ Finding time for leisure has to be purposeful for many of us, and celebrating World Art Day is a way to do this. It allows us to make time for art (either to make it or to enjoy it) without feeling guilty about the need to be doing something else. Until this year, I didn’t know that World Art Day was a thing, but I’m glad it is! I’m lucky that my job revolves around art – I get to immerse myself in art every day, but not everyone can, so I think it’s great to have a day dedicated to appreciating art and artists.

” She also stated that art is important because, “Art is essential in our daily lives. From aesthetically pleasing products to beautiful cinematic shots, to the art on our walls, art constantly surrounds us. It can bring joy — either fleeting or lasting — whether we are simply viewing the art, or whether we are actively involved in creating it.

” How can you get involved? There are lots of different ways to celebrate World Art Day. This year’s theme is, A Garden of Expression: Cultivating Community Through Art. This theme leaves lots of room for interpretation.

You can sign up for an art class, visit a local gallery or do a paint night with your friends. But not everyone has time for something huge. Melanie’s plans this year are, “(not) to do anything big to celebrate or mark the day, just create a little art and make a point of learning about a new-to-me artist.

” World Art Day reminds us of the power of creativity in our lives. Whether through painting, music, or other forms, art connects us and helps us see the world differently. As we celebrate artists past and present, we thereby continue supporting and protecting the arts for future generations to enjoy.
