The Gering City Council approved the purchase of two new marked pursuit vehicles at their regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The two police vehicles being replaced will be sold at auction, according to Gering Police Chief George Holthus.

“One of them is a 2017 Ford Explorer with 80,000 miles,” he said, “and the other one is a 2016 Dodge Charger with 94,000 miles.” The vehicles came out to $42,255 each with a $500 delivery fee per vehicle, approximately $21,000 in equipment installed in each and $8,000 for installation and graphics, for a total of roughly $114,510. Holthus had a budget of $120,000.

City Administrator Pat Heath asked if more income could be generated by trading the vehicles, but Holthus said trading isn’t an option on police cruisers. Councilmember Julie Morrison asked if it would save the delivery fee to send someone to Fremont to pick up the vehicles. “We have done that in the past,” Holthus said, “but by the time you pay three vehicles with three officers to drive eight hours and then come back, the $500 is very reasonable.

” The council approved three Keno fund requests at its meeting. The Gering Multi-purpose Center received $20,000 for an HVAC replacement, the Warrior Run received $4,000 and the Scotts Bluff County Volunteer Center also received $4,000. Region 22 Emergency Management’s new director Rob Crowder introduced himself to the council and he and administrative assistant Ashley Hopkins gave the council an update on the department.

“Emergency management is really tough to explain about what we do,” Hopkins said, “but mostly it's to support and advise. We just want to continue to support this community and all the different facets, because (the council) has a heart for serving, and we want to tap into that.” Contact Megan Kelley: megan.
