Stephen Thompson has revealed that the Canadian would seek out opportunities to train with people who had the capacity to dominate him in specific areas of the sport. In an interview with The Overdogs Podcast, he explained: “His mindset helped me. In MMA, there’s a lot of ego.
It’s a selfish sport to begin with. But with GSP, he would train with people that would just smash him.“If it’s striking, he wants somebody that was better than him at striking.
If it was jiu-jitsu, he’s out there training with Roger Gracie, who’s two weight classes above him.“He would put himself in situations with guys who could just smash him, and he would get better, if it were striking or wrestling. “I saw him and Rashad Evans go at it at Tristar one time; it was sick.
I saw him and Roger Gracie go at it, and he would get submitted all the time.“He would always come into the gym with an empty cup, every day. It didn’t matter that he was a multiple time champion, he would come in and learn not just from the coaches, but from everybody.
“I was like, ‘That’s what I have to do’. With me in kickboxing, especially when I was young, I was undefeated in kickboxing; I thought I was the best. And that’s how I should act every time I come into the gym.
He set an example.“There was a point where I was like, ‘Nobody can beat me’. I would end up missing practices, my dad would always tell me, ‘We know Wonderboy, you’re young and you’re stupid, you should be in the gym training, they help you get ready and you should help them get ready’.
“It took a little while for me to actually see somebody at the top and see how they were acting to be like, ‘That’s what I should do’.“Even though he’d have a fight, and he had just got through training camp, if he had guys who had fights coming up, he was there in the gym helping them get ready. I was like, ‘Bro, that’s cool’.
