FORMER world champion Marlon Tapales and highly-rated minimumweight Joey Canoy will now have their respective regional title fights at home on April 27, 2025, at Venue 88 in Gen. Santos City. The fights of Tapales and Canoy were originally scheduled for April 14, 2025, in Cambodia.
Tapales will face Indonesian fighter Jon Jon Jet for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver super-bantamweight title. “I’m very thrilled to be fighting back home again in Gen San. It’s been five years since I fought here, and I’ll make sure to give a great fight,” Tapales said.
The 33-year-old Tapales is currently ranked No. 2 by the WBC, No. 3 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), and No.
5 by the World Boxing Association (WBA). “It’s really good to see Marlon Tapales fighting back here in Gen San before he competes again in the U.S.
at the end of this year, hopefully for a world title,” said Sanman CEO JC Manangquil. After losing to Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue in a world title unification bout in Japan, Tapales won back-to-back fights. He beat Nattapong Jankaew by first-round knockout and Saurabh Kumar by unanimous decision.
Tapales has an impressive record of 39-4 with 20 knockouts, while Jet has a 15-1-1 slate with 12 knockouts. Meanwhile, Canoy (23-5-2, 14 KOs) will trade leathers with Minh Phat Sam (10-5, 8 KOs) for the WBC International minimumweight belt in the co-main event. / EKA.
