Followers of cleaning sensation Sophie Hinchliffe, better known as Mrs Hinch , have formed online communities to share their own cherished household tips and tricks. Among the numerous groups on Facebook , one in particular has addressed the common issue of dealing with pesky flies that buzz around our homes during warm weather . The group, named Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips, boasts over 635,000 members and recently saw one follower ask for advice on how to prevent the unwanted insect from entering her home.

She asked: "Has anyone got any home remedies to deter house flies? They are making me mad! Please help." Given the higher temperatures across the country leading to people inevitably opening their windows and unintentionally inviting in the bug, it's no surprise that the post quickly sparked interest among many in the group. The post garnered hundreds of comments featuring various DIY hacks, with one user suggesting a simple sandwich bag trick.

The cleaning enthusiast explained that a transparent bag filled with water and some coins should be placed in front of the homeowner's door, claiming it "stopped them from coming in". The group member added: "Not sure why it works but it does reduce them." Others endorsed the method, advising that 1p and 2p coins work perfectly when hung in front of open doors or windows.

Another member suggested the trick works because the bag and coins "resemble and predator" and scare the flies away. Fans of Mrs Hinch called for the use of citronella candles and incense, and even recommended studding half a lemon with cloves, alongside placing herbs like basil and lavender near open doors and windows to fend off flies. Sharing a tried and tested method, one individual claimed: "We used to grow basil by the back door when we lived in Western Australia as they were so bad.

"There are a few different herbs that are recommended to grow around the doorways to help keep flies at bay. I would google to see what is recommended.".
