26 with Gene in the mudroom and Betsy discovered in the bathroom along with one of their dog, Zinna. Zinna was dead in a crate inside the bathroom closet. The couple had three dogs in total: Zinna, Bear and Nikita.

Zinna was the only found dead while Bear and Nikita were found alive on the property. New Mexico's chief medical investigator, Dr. Heather Jarrell, in a news conference revealed the couple's cause of death on March 7 after much speculation.

Dr. Jarrell said that Gene's death was due to "extensive heart disease" with Alzheimer's disease as a contributing factor. While Betsy's autopsy exhibited she died from Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome , which is a disease that spreads through the exposure of rats and mice that carry the virus.

A necropsy report reviewed by ABC News stated that Zinna had presumably died of dehydration and starvation. Officials also previously stated the 95-year-old had likely died on Feb. 18 based on the record heart activity of his pacemaker’s recorded heart activity and Betsy, 65, likely passed away about a week prior.

Along with the police cam footage showing one of their dogs by Betsy's side, it showed how the home was in disarray and cluttered with an assortment of items. On Monday, April 14, it was announced that the couple home was a "breeding ground for infestation." According to TMZ , the New Mexico Department of Public Health did a environmental assessment in March and found that their home was infested with rodents.

They had located rodent feces in the property such as in the three garages, two casitas, and three sheds. There was also a live rodent, a dead rodent, and a rodent nest unearthed in the garages. Furthermore, the two vehicles on the property also had evidence of rodents.
