Out promoting the “Dexter” prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” this week, actors Sarah Michelle Gellar and Christian Slater turned up on “The Drew Barrymore Show” the other day to discuss the show. During the conversaion the topic of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” came up. Barrymore revealed she auditioned for the “Buffy” film, a role that ultimately went to Kristy Swanson.
Gellar, who of course played the more famous TV incarnation of the character across seven seasons, then brought up that the film also contains a line about “marrying Christian Slater” which drew applause. Then Barrymore asked Gellar that if “Dexter” is getting an origin story, would she ever consider a revival/reboot of “Buffy”. Gellar says (via : It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect.
But watching ‘Sex and the City’ and seeing ‘Dexter’, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'” After some back and forth with Barrymore and Slater, Gellar agreed such a show would not need to be a prequel series: “No, it could be anything. It’s a universe.
And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.” As recently as 2022, Gellar still seemed opposed to the idea of revisiting Buffy, saying it “doesn’t need to be done” though was more talking about a reboot as such.
