Geelong best-and-fairest winner Ray Card identified as driver in fatal car crash

The former footballer is in hospital and under a police guard.

Geelong great Ray Card has been identified as the man under police guard after a fatal accident on Saturday night in Lara . It has been confirmed that Card — a best-and-fairest winner for Geelong in 1983 — was driving the vehicle on the Geelong Ring Rd at around 11.20pm AEDT on Saturday .

Card’s passenger, a 57-year-old woman, was tragically killed in the collision. An unconfirmed report says the woman was Card’s wife. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Paramedics rushed to the scene, however, the woman was declared dead at the scene.



Card’s Ford Ranger collided with a BMW, driven by a 23-year-old Lara man. Card, 67, is in a stable condition at Royal Melbourne Hospital. His remains under police guard as authorities investigate the circumstances around the crash.

“The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be established,” police said on the night. Card debuted for Geelong in 1977 and retired after 110 games at the end of 1987. His father, George Card, also played for the Cats in the 1940s.
