Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page revealed she noticed a change in her husband's behaviour as he prepares to celebrate a major birthday milestone

Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page shared a rare insight into her married life as her husband approaches a major birthday milestone, questioning if he was going through a "mid-life crisis". Joanna, who also made a memorable cameo appearance in Love Actually, celebrated her 48th birthday last month. Meanwhile husband James Thornton is preparing to mark his 50th birthday in October.

While Joanna revealed James has recently been taking up self-care, prompting her to wonder if he's having a "mid-life crisis", she has been left questioning what to get as the perfect birthday gift. Speaking to EastEnders icon Natalie Cassidy on their On The Telly podcast, Joanna revealed she had already ruled out some ideas. The star decided she wants to do something she has “never really” done with her husband. Speaking to Natalie, Joanna said: “I thought stuff it, I’m going to take me and him away for a couple of days because we’ve never really been away for a good few days just the pair of us.” Joanna said she considered buying James a “green egg barbecue”.

She explained: “You know those Big Green Egg barbecues, I think I’m going to get him one of those just because I heard people talking about them and somebody I know put something like half a side of cow in there or something, closed it up and left it cooking for 24 hours and it was really good.” Joanna explained she was “not waiting until October” to give her husband the cooker, so decided she would “drip feed” presents throughout the year. The star later revealed she was left questioning "what happened" to her husband after he purchased a waxing kit online.

She explained: "He's ordered over the internet, this beeswax and then you melt it and put lollipop sticks into it and you have this melted beeswax and you put it, it's like waxing your skin, and he's put it all the way up his nose until it goes hard, and he's there with these lollipop sticks sticking out. "Then he chose to do in the middle of his eyebrow so he's got a lollipop sticking off his head and I looked at you and said, 'what's happened to you, is this some sort of mid-life crisis? In the 23 years we've been married, you've never once done anything to look after yourself apart from put deodrant on and a bit of aftershave and had a shower'." Joanna and James met on the set of BBC ’s David Copperfield in 1999.

The pair tied the knot four years later going on to share two daughters, called Eva and Boe, and two sons called Kit and Noah. The Welsh actress has been candid about their relationship over the years. She once confessed that lockdown put a dampener on their sex life and revealed she underwent an “impulsive” surgery to prevent her from having more children.

"We spent the whole of the first lockdown arguing and threatening to divorce each other," she recalled. "Then we went through a month of literally not saying a single word to each other.".
