April is the perfect time to plant out young Bearded Irises which produce a beautiful display each year.

I adore Bearded Irises; they impress no end in late spring into summertime. I plant new young ones at this time of year so they can establish and give us wonderful flower displays year after year. The Bearded Iris is a perennial, meaning they come back each year.

They come in lots of different colours and look majestic in a sunny bed or border. The Bearded Iris should be planted in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. The bare root or Rhizome, as they are known, should be planted just under the surface of the ground.

They should not be planted too deep or into waterlogged soil as this can cause them to rot. An open spot that gets hot summer sun is just fine, they cope well with heat. We can divide clumps after they have flowered in late summertime and create new Iris displays.

We shouldn’t put mulch onto Iris Rhizomes as this can also cause them to root. A granular feed is the best way to give the Irises a nutritious boost. The Bearded Iris is a must for the garden and now is the time to get planting.
