While it may seem odd, autumn is the perfect time to set up a home composter if you don't already have one, as you'll likely have a lot of garden waste that can be used alongside your basic food scraps. Laura at the Young Growers Club has shared a TikTok explaining just how gardeners can set up a compost bin, and the sorts of things that should be added to this.

"Let me show you how to set up a composter," she begins, "I'm siting my composter on the lawn in a nice sunny position. function loadOvpScript(){let el=document.createElement('script');el.

Other options for those who don't have woodchips are to use sticks and cardboard or dried leaves.

"Because this is my first batch of compost, I'm going to add in some healthy soil from the garden," continues Laura, "doing this helps to speed up the composting process." Following this Laura's tips depend on what you have in your home and garden. For example, she explains that due to the presence of red worms in her "decomposing grass pile" she opted to add some of this to her compost bin.

After adding some of the grass and worms to the bin, Laura gave it a good mix. @younggrowersclub Autumn is a great time of year to set up a home composter as youll have lots of garden waste. "For the green layer I've gone for some food waste and fresh garden waste" Laura explained as she added some rotten apples and vegetable peels to the compost. "The brown layer I went for some more woodchip and some shredded paper, although everything I added is reasonably wet, I did decide to add in a bit more moisture. "I then used my aeration tool and gave it a good mix around.
