While peace lilies are celebrated for their elegant blooms and air-purifying qualities, they require specific conditions to thrive. An expert has warned of a "weak spot" that plant owners should be wary of. Experts speaking to GB News have emphasised the importance of humidity, temperature, and proper watering in maintaining healthy peace lilies.
Anastasia Borisevich, a plant expert from Plantum , highlighted that dry air is the peace lily’s primary vulnerability. "Put the pot on a windowsill with bright, diffused light, daily mist its foliage or place a humidifier nearby, and the plant will please you with lush flowering," she advised. Andrew Connolly, founder of the gardening blog Little Flower Cottage, echoed this, stressing the need for consistent humidity.
"Regular misting, a pebble tray with water, or a humidifier will help meet their humidity needs. Keep them in temperatures above 16°C and away from draughty windows," he said. The amount of water peace lilies require varies with their life stage and the season.
Anastasia explained: "During the growing season, water the plant abundantly. Reduce watering in winter but never let the soil dry out completely." She also warned against waterlogging, recommending gardeners always empty the saucer after watering.
Andrew added that peace lilies are forgiving when thirsty, often drooping as a sign they need water. However, overwatering can lead to root rot. "Water thoroughly once the top inch of the soil feels dry," he advised.
Temperature is another critical factor in peace lily care. Anastasia suggested maintaining an optimal range of 22°C to 23°C, while also ensuring plants are shielded from draughts. “In winter, your plant can handle temperatures dropping to 16°C to 18°C,” she said.
For peace lilies to thrive over the years, repotting and fertilizing are essential. Andrew recommended repotting every two to three years using a well-draining potting mix designed for indoor plants. "This prevents root crowding and refreshes the soil, supporting healthy growth," he explained.
Anastasia advised feeding peace lilies twice a month from spring to autumn with fertilizers formulated for flowering plants..
