English ivy , notorious for its sticky aerial roots and ability to thrive in low-light conditions, is a common nuisance in gardens and homes, especially in shaded areas. Its aggressive grip can lead to structural damage , making its removal a priority for many homeowners. Recently, gardeners have taken to Facebook to share a quick, budget-friendly method to eliminate ivy, costing as little as 30p.

Mary Cook, seeking advice in the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook group, asked: “What’s a good way to get rid of unwanted ivy?” While some members recommended using bleach, Marianne Taylor offered a safer alternative: white vinegar. Taylor suggested: “The only way to eradicate ivy is to remove as much of it as possible by hand and then use white vinegar. “It will be dead overnight, and you can work to remove it at the root with weedkiller or professional help.

” To use this method, mix 80 percent water with 20 percent white vinegar and spray the ivy thoroughly. Gena Lorraine, a gardener at Fantastic Services, cautioned gardeners to avoid spraying other plants, as white vinegar can harm them. Boiling water is another option, but handling the ivy afterward requires gloves due to its skin-irritating oils.

With just a little effort and a low-cost solution, English ivy can be effectively tackled and removed, leaving your garden free of this invasive plant..
