Lack of sunlight and cold temperatures during the winter months means our lawns can often look worse for wear by the time spring arrives, appearing patchy and sparse. But with the change in weather, April is the perfect time to give it a much needed transformation so you can get outside and make the most of your garden . It doesn’t have to be an expensive task either, and one gardener has shared their four tips for bringing your lawn back to life.
In a video posted on TikTok , Sophie from @lookinsidemygarden revealed the budget-friendly ways they revive their lawn in spring. The gardener said following this "basic lawn care" can quickly transform your garden, with April being "the perfect time to do it". Weeding Start by removing weeds and giving your lawn a general tidy-up, as this will help restore its appearance.
While weeds are mostly harmless, depending on their size, they can also block light from reaching surrounding areas of grass, leading to sparse patches of grass. Don’t be afraid to "dig deep and get those roots because otherwise they’re just going to come back". Scarifying Sophie said that "people often skip" the step of scarifying the lawn with a rake, but it’s one that you "must, must" do.
Raking out the top layer of grass and thatch, this technique involves cutting through dead matter which can prevent water and air getting to the grass roots and "you’ll be amazed at what comes out," the creator said. Aeration Once the dead matter has been raked away, you can continue to aerate the lawn. A common technique used to help revive lawns, this improves airflow and allows nutrients to get back into the soil.
While Sophie does this with a spiked shoe in the video, creating lots of tiny holes, you can also simply do this with a fork to achieve the same results. Seed Finally, you’ll want to add a layer of seeds to the lawn. Using “a good old Wilco seed” this step will help thicken grass and fill in sparse areas that haven’t grown over winter, improving the health of your lawn.
For extra measure, the gardener goes over this with a top dressing, recommending to use the “cheapest top soil you can”. Adding top dressing, which is just a mix of soil, sand and organic matter, will encourage fresh and healthy grass growth, with spring being the ideal time to do this..
