The patient with the penetrating eye injury was referred to Gandhi Hospital’s outpatient department (OPD) from a private eye care hospital and Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). According to the Superintendent, Gandhi Hospital, Dr Ch Rajkumari, the patient presented to the OPD of a private eye institute in Hyderabad on April 8 with a penetrating injury to the right eye caused by a screwdriver.
Upon evaluation and investigations, it was found that the injury had breached the frontal bone and extended to the frontal lobe. ‘In view of the severity of the injury and the need for neurosurgical intervention, the patient was referred to NIMS on April 9 for further management,” Dr Rajkumari said. Subsequently, the patient was referred to Gandhi Hospital on April 10, where the ophthalmology team confirmed no eye ball involvement and referred to neurosurgery, where the neurosurgical team successfully removed the embedded screwdriver.
The patient is on his way to recovery and will be soon discharged, Dr Rajkumari added.
