Game of Thrones is a beloved series which was adapted from the work of George R.R. Martin who is the mastermind behind the entire A Song of Ice and Fire book series.

The hit HBO series Games of Thrones wouldn’t have been possible without George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series on which the show was based.

With the success of his best-selling book series, and its TV adaptation, Game of Thrones , it’s safe to say that George’s literary creations have garnered him a bit of wealth. As of this year, the author’s net worth is estimated to be about $120 million which stems from his career as a writer, producer, and creative mastermind. While George can thank his different income streams, such as TV royalties and projects like Elden Ring, for his prosperity, Game of Thrones remains the primary source of his fortune.

George’s Song of Ice and Fire series has sold over 90 million copies globally, and the amount is continually growing as more fans discover it. For each book George sells, depending on the format, he makes about $1 to $2 in royalties, enabling him to most likely pocket tens of millions of dollars throughout the years. "When I began, I didn't know what the hell I had," George said, reminiscing on the origins of his first novel in his book series, A Game of Thrones.

"I thought it might be a short story; it was just this chapter, where they find these direwolf pups. Then I started exploring these families and the world started coming alive." George’s stroke of inspiration proved very lucrative for the novelist, especially when HBO adapted his book in 2011, greatly increasing his book sales.

The same year the book was turned into a show, fans bought over 8 million copies. Along with raw sales, George made a pretty penny from reprints, special editions, and e-books. Digital books definitely have boosted his wealth as millions of readers are choosing to read his work on Kindles and iPads.

Forbes reported that even while George works on The Winds of Winter, "he hasn't failed to reel in millions annually since book five, thanks to backlist sales." At the core, George’s TV deal with HBO, which earned about $15 million per season, is where most of his wealth stems from. Game of Thrones were on-air for 8 seasons.

But it can’t be negated that his book series is his bread and butter, fueling his creative legacy and hefty bank account. George’s riches will continue to mount as spinoff series like House of the Dragon keep the Game of Thrones franchise alive.
