By Paul Horton Epperstone’s Harry Gamble started his debut season with success in the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT Championship at Donington Park. Gamble who kickstarted his motorsport pathway last season in the Ginetta GT Academy, was on the podium three times at the weekend, taking a second overall win as well as two Pro/Am class prizes. Gamble said: “It was a good weekend, the car ran well and big thanks to all at Elite Motorsport for keeping me where I needed to be.

“Race One was great to take second with the class podiums as well. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season already.” A new race series and race car is always a challenge for any driver, but Gamble took to the brand-new #23 Ginetta G56 GTP8 race car like a duck to water.

He’s stayed with championship-winning team Elite Motorsport, who helped him through his first year. Race one on Saturday saw Gamble on the fifth row, inside line for the start, as the lights went out. By the end of lap one Gamble was into fourth place and pushing hard, bettering himself three laps later and straight into third place in the 20-minute race.

A lap later, he was second where he stayed as he finished 1.5 seconds behind the winner. It was a well-driven and deserved second spot for his first race in the car.

Sunday’s race two was another sunny affair for the 26-year-old racer, with a new format 40-minute, mandatory pit stop race for the season. Starting from 10th, he knew this would be a challenge with the traffic ahead. A great start saw Gamble straight into eighth and seventh virtually straight after but, as expected, it was the cars ahead that were holding him back.

By lap 11, the pit stop window was open. Gamble’s strategy was to stop out as long as he could. Four laps later cars were diving into the pits for their stops, Gamble remained out on track with positions on the leader board changing rapidly.

He was up to sixth and on lap 17 pitted the car after a brief spell ahead of the field. He was straight back out in seventh and not losing too much time. By the end of the 40 minutes and 25 laps, Gamble took sixth overall and a well-deserved third place podium in Pro/Am class.
