GALWAY camogie ace Aoife Donohue will be raring to go again after a well-earned break. The Mullagh forward starred for the Tribes this summer as they reached the All-Ireland final against Cork, before suffering a 1-16 to 0-16 defeat . Donohue fired 0-4 in that loss at Croke Park — and has been nominated for Player of the Year.

The schoolteacher reset with her club but they were beaten by Oranmore-Maree in the Galway championship quarter-finals last Friday. Donohue is now ready for a rest after a taxing summer. She said: “The year is long.

Most county teams will be back doing a bit of pre-season in December and even November for some of them. “I’m obviously disappointed with the way the club finished and that kind of stuff. “But I’m definitely due a break now just to recharge, even just mentally as well.

“It’s a long year so I’m glad of a break now, to be honest. “Obviously, regret will be the main one, losing the All-Ireland final to a very good Cork team. “Again, we’d be very proud of the performance and getting back to an All-Ireland final.

“But ultimately it ended in disappointment, I suppose. "We put everything into trying to win the All-Ireland this year and we were there or thereabouts.” Donohue, 30, has three All-Ireland medals with Galway — in 2013, 2019 and 2021 — and is determined to add a fourth.

She continued: “There’s a lot of younger girls now coming up and they’ve got good exposure now at senior level and another year, I suppose, under their belts and there’s still obviously a couple of those older ones hanging around. “We should have a fairly strong team again next year and hope we’ll be there or thereabouts. “There’ll be a huge drive and hunger to try and get back again.

"Obviously we’re all trying to catch up to Cork after the double now, so they’re the benchmark. “But yeah, there’ll be a huge drive again from within the group. We’ll reset and we’ll go again.
