It’s been a great experience – excellent leadership, governance and programme structure in a school with a growing population. My newsletter this week has a number of items relating to the things I’ve seen and experienced during the week – starting with a focus on how we can take care of ourselves in these challenging times and still demonstrate leadership that matters,In this newsletter..

The connection here is that this week Maurie and I were online with the group of APs and DPs we’re working with on our Refresh, Reconnect, Refocus programme as they came to the midpoint of the programme. Maurie has captured well the sense of pride we had in this group of dedicated educators who are growing in their leadership despite some very challenging circumstances.

Coping With Compassion FatigueFollowing on from Maurie’s post, Teacher Magazine’s latest article titled Coping with Compassion Fatigue points to new research from Monash University, published in the Australian Journal for Education (AJE) that explores professional quality of life (ProQoL) among teachers. According to the study, Coping in the classroom: A study of Professional Quality of Life (ProQoL) in Australian teachers, ProQoL comprises 2 constructs: compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue. I wasn’t familiar with these terms before reading the article, but can certainly attest to seeing the evidence of these things in my recent visits to schools! Why We’re Better Than We Think We AreI’ve been a subscriber to Fixthenews.

com for a while now – it’s a fabulous antidote to the relentless flow of ‘bad news’ flooding our media channels nowadays. Recently they have been posting a series of podcasts under the title ‘Hope is A Verb‘ which contains some seriously worthwhile contributions. The final in the series features an interview with Rutger Bregman, author of one of my favourite books, Humankind: A Hopeful History.

Bregman’s episode is titled “why we are better than we think we are” – and as the title suggests, is a great provocation to step up and do something about the challenges we see.AI For EducatorsAI For Educators is a resource from the University of Sydney. The site says it is “.

..designed for educators by educators, created to support the productive and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence in teaching and learning at the University of Sydney and beyond.

This site complements our ‘AI in Education‘ site which is designed for students by students, and contains resources and advice.” You can access most of the site content (licensed CC-by NC) but seems you’ll need a university ID to login to any of the courses they offer.Climate Literacy ResourceThe U.

S. Global Change Research Programme has developed this useful Climate Literacy Guide that I’d recommend for educators looking for ideas around structuring curricula; assessing gains in people’s knowledge and understanding; stimulating dialogue among people with different interests, skills, and perspectives; and informing climate-related decisions and policies. The explains clearly what is meant by climate literacy and why this is important and then presents 8 Global Climate Literacy principles (p.

vii) that are expanded on, providing heaps of great ideas that can be used in the design of learning programmes.Māori Features in MapsIn case you missed the news this week, Apple have teamed up with iwi to add new Māori features in Maps. This will provide Māori names, stories and identifying sites of cultural significance for Apple Maps.

Huge potential here for educators looking to develop greater understandings of whakapapa with stories of local significance etc. Well done to all involved in this initiative – now I’ll just have to wait until I can access these features on my non-Apple app!Spread the word please! Thanks for spreading the word – the number of subscriptions to the FutureMakers newsletter continues to climb – but I’d still like more to achieve my target of an additional 500 subscribers by the end of April.
