Our democracy is in grave danger. In only nine short weeks Donald Trump has weakened nearly all facets of our government and has surely made our once great country much weaker on many fronts. He governs (rules) by executive order while the Republican Congress sits idle abdicating its constitutional mandate to make law and to provide oversight of the executive branch.
The president has taken the United States out of the Paris Climate Accords and has severely weakened environmental protections while wildfires, unprecedented severe storms and floods ravish many areas of the country. He has dispatched his clueless sycophant, Elon “Chainsaw” Musk, to tear down the inner workings of the government in the guise of waste, fraud, and abuse. While no specific examples have been reported, tens of thousands of federal workers are being summarily and illegally dispatched from their positions without notice or cause.
While promising not to cut Social Security, he has closed many offices, cut the already insufficient workforce, and enacted rules to make it more difficult for recipients to process claims or to get information. He has started a trade war with our friends and allies by declaring tariffs on Canada, Mexico and much of Europe for no logical economic reason. This has caused the stock market to plummet, and he admits that a recession may be the result.
He has caused over 100 immigrants to be rounded up and removed in shackles to El Salvador’s most notorious prison without proper vetting or warrants. Some of these are clearly not criminals or gang members. The latest episode of ineptness in the administration involves Top Secret military information being discussed by text over an unsecure platform by members of his cabinet, including the secretary of defense and the vice president.
The Constitution has no mention of Executive Orders, though they have been used in instances when expedience is necessary. They do not have the weight of the law and are often challenged in the courts. There are now dozens of cases pending concerning Trump’s orders.
Of course, the shock and awe agenda is intentional to keep the press and the public a few steps behind and to make it nearly impossible to fully comprehend or even keep track of what is happening. So, what is in store for the next 46months? The midterm elections are scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026, only 19 months away.
Can we undo the damage then? Do we really think that the man who ordered an attack on the US Capitol in an attempt to overturn a free and fair election, one that he clearly lost, would hesitate to find a pretext to halt the next election if he thought his power would be weakened? He would certainly not let a little thing like the Constitution get in his way! He has already withdrawn the appointment of Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations out of fear of losing her district, our district, in a special election. As the carnage continues it is becoming increasingly more difficult to put the pieces back or to recover from the chaos and destruction. All that has transpired over the past nine weeks is merely prelude to the next 46 months.
Freedom is at stake. Democracy, as we know it, is at stake. Our reputation in the world is at stake.
The future of our children and our grandchildren is at stake. Everything that makes and has made the United States of America great is at stake. The authors of Project 2025 claim that we are entering a Post Constitutional Era.
We cannot allow that to become our destiny. Vigilance, awareness and action are required of us at this critical time in our nation’s history. — Paul Fitzpatrick, Rome.
