Some strong Orange County teams appear to be underrated in the new computer-based system that will determine CIF-SS playoff divisions.

If you’re consuming this content, which we used to call “reading,” then you follow high school sports which means you likely remember the rankings system that placed football teams into the playoff divisions. The basics of that system are now also in place for other CIF Southern Section sports, including the boys and girls basketball playoffs that begin Feb. 12.

Every CIF-SS boys basketball team and every CIF-SS girls basketball team that qualifies for the playoffs will be placed in a playoff division according to its power-points number at the end of the regular season. The first version of the boys and girls rankings were released this week. Those rankings will look different each Monday when they are updated and posted on the CIF-SS website until the regular season ends Feb.

5. The system the Southern Section is using is SB Live’s Colley Royalty Method. According to the Southern Section’s season preview, this method is a “linear algebra-based ranking algorithm.

” Well, OK. You can consume content about it in the season preview for basketball on the CIF Southern Section website, cifss.org.

You will learn that the Colley Royalty Method base equation is derived from Laplace’s Rule of Succession. “Colley” is Westley Colley, an astrophysicist. The important stuff to know is that teams that qualified for the playoffs will be grouped into divisions by their power-points profiles.

The top eight or so teams will be in the top division, the Open Division. Then the next 32 teams will be placed into Division 1, the next 32 into Division 2AA, and down to the group of 32 playoff teams in the lowest playoff division. In the rankings released this week, St.

John Bosoco is the section’s No. 1 team with a rating of 2.644 (the lowest ranking is a -0.

655). Taking a look at Orange County boys basketball teams, the Colley’ Royalty Method is in some disagreement with how yours truly ranks county boys basketball teams. The Colley Royalty Method has Canyon at No.

6 in its CIF-SS rankings. That is the highest ranking of an Orange County team. After Canyon comes No.

7 JSerra, No. 15 Mater Dei, No. 18 Corona del Mar, No.

19 Pacifica Christian and No. 22 Santa Margarita. The Orange County Top 25 prepared by me has Santa Margarita at No.

1 in the county. The county Top 25 has Los Alamitos, widely regarded by Orange County coaches as the best public-school team in the county, at No. 3.

The Colley’s Method has Los Alamitos at No. 57 in the CIF Southern Section which puts Los Alamitos at No. 17 among Orange County teams.

Colley’s Method has 10 O.C. public school teams ranked above Los Alamitos.

The Colley’s Method CIF-SS girls basketball rankings have Ontario Christian, Sierra Canyon and Mater Dei at Nos. 1-2-3. That looks good.

My Orange County Register partner Dan Albano, who is in charge of our coverage of county girls basketball, said a couple of oddities in the girls ranking include Sage Hill at No. 43, which puts Sage at No. 10 among Orange County girls teams; Sage Hill is No.

2 in this week’s O.C. girls basketball rankings .

Albano also found Etiwanda, at No. 11 in the Colley’s Method, to be several positions lower than where he would place Etiwanda. Back to boys basketball .

.. The Classic at Damien boys basketball tournament ended Monday.

It is the premier boys basketball tournament in California. The tournament’s top division of its eight divisions was the Platinum Division, a 16-team group of very elite teams that included Los Alamitos and Santa Margarita. The Platinum Division included the Colley’s Method No.

1, 4 and 5 CIF-SS teams that in order are St. John Bosco, Roosevelt of Eastvale and La Mirada. Somebody figured Los Alamitos and Santa Margarita belonged with that group.

NOTES The CIF Southern Section has a website to which all teams in all sports are required to enter their season schedule and wins and losses. The CIF-SS basketball season preview informs member schools that failure to enter accurate results into its will result in the team being ineligible for the playoffs. A look through website reveals that some teams are not entering all of their results.
