T'puram: Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) in Thekkumbhagam panchayat , located in Chavara block of Kollam district , is making significant strides in waste collection . Last year, the Sena set an example by collecting 5,627 tonnes of inorganic waste from households and institutions in the panchayat. By handing over the collected waste to Clean Kerala Company , they earned an additional income of Rs 2,94,700.

In the panchayat, there are 26 HKS members, with two members in each of the 13 wards. The Sena focuses on door-to-door collection from households and cleaning public spaces in the panchayat. Through continuous efforts related to waste collection, HKS has managed to achieve an 85% user fee collection by March 2025, thereby increasing their income.

Currently, each member receives a monthly salary ranging from Rs 8,500 to Rs 12,500. Additionally, they earned an extra income by transferring the collected waste to Clean Kerala Company. For temporarily storing the collected waste, an MCF facility and necessary basic amenities for the Sena members have been arranged under leadership of the panchayat.

Alongside effective waste collection, other exemplary activities are being implemented in the panchayat by HKS. As part of this, they have cleaned the public market in Thekkumbhagam panchayat. They also planted trees and fruit saplings, transforming the area into a community-friendly space.

Initiatives aimed at generating additional income for HKS members are in the initial stages..
